JV girls' basketball team places third at CAJ Mini Tournament

The JV girls' basketball team placed third out of four teams on Wednesday at a JV Mini Tournament hosted by CAJ. The Knights lost 31-21 to Yokota before beating Kinnick 29-15.

Against Yokota, a slow offensive start hurt CAJ. The Knights scored just five points in the first half and actually had an 18-5 deficit at one point in the third quarter. CAJ was able to make a run by playing with better energy and relaxing on its shots.

"We seemed really nervous to start," coach Jared Johnson said. "Maybe it was the fact that we hadn't played a game in about two weeks, but we weren't relaxing on our shots and a lot of them were falling just out. In the second half, the ball movement was crisp and shots started to fall."

The game against Kinnick started just 15 minutes after both teams had finished their previous games. The Knights appeared more energetic than the Red Devils and were able to move the ball around well against Kinnick's defense to find occasional baskets.

"On offense, we did our job by protecting the ball and taking good shots," Johnson said. "But it was our defense that won this game. We played a diamond-and-1 that was executed really well."

In the two games combined, Mari led CAJ with 26 points and 30 rebounds. Mariko had eight points and six steals, Tayoung had eight points and Akina had six points.

The Knights' overall season record is now an even 6-6 as they prepare to play at Yokota on Friday evening.
