The high school girls' cross country team started its season in a hot, humid meet on Saturday by defeating YIS 26-29 and losing 19-40 to ISSH on Saturday.
Without two of its runners, CAJ had exactly the number of runners (five) needed to score. Kiera was first for the Knights, placing fifth out of 50 runners with a time of 15:18.3. CAJ had Joy (16:21.8, 12th), Anna (16:44.5, 18th), Sion (18:07.1, 35th) and Jia (18:22.1, 36th) follow her to the finish line. Full results from the meet are available here.
The win against YIS was the first win for the team in since two years ago, as the team struggled with a lack of runners and experience last season.
"We had some girls doing the course for the first time, so the big hill was a bit surprising," head coach Nate Rudd said. "But even so, they did pull off some good times. They showed good effort and showed they could excel now while still showing room for improvement for next week."
The girls will return for another meet at Tama Hills next Saturday. All high school girls ran the 3.3-kilometer course for the first meet, but they will run the 4.4-kilometer course for the rest of the season.
