HS boys' cross country loses to St. Mary's but defeats St. Maur

The high school boys' cross country team faced both St. Mary's and St. Maur at Tama Hills on Saturday. CAJ defeated St. Maur 17-44 but fell to St. Mary's 21-34 on the 4.4-kilometer course, moving its record to 2-3.

The Knights' first five runners to cross the finish line were Jordan (16:03.7, 7th out of 67 varsity runners), Hayato (16:48.5, 18th), Stephen (16:58.4, 20th), Koh-William (17:09.8, 24th) and Go (17:50.3, 31st). Five of the nine Knights who ran had personal bests (Koh-William, Go, Ty, Ken and Zion), and one other runner had a season best (Stephen). Full results from the meet are available

"Against a strong St. Mary’s showing, we performed very well," coach Nate Rudd said. "The only reason we lost today is that they did much better than we expected, because we did very well."

Rudd added: "We want to be working more on speed and hills next. Their times at the mile mark [before the big hills] have proven that they’ve gotten the endurance part down."

For the middle school, GyungWon represented the Knights well with his fourth consecutive personal best time. He completed the 3.3-kilometer course in 14:37.7 and placed 37th out of 137 middle school boy runners.

"If GyungWon continues to improve at a steady pace, it will be interesting to see where’s going to end up at Finals," Rudd said. "He’s looking very good."

CAJ's middle school and freshmen runners will complete next Thursday again at Tama Hills on the lower course, which is 5k for the high school. The entire team will also run that course the following Saturday, which is October 13.
