Varsity girls' basketball completes first day of Kanto Classic Tournament

What a night it was for the girls' varsity basketball team on Thursday!

The Knights' first game of the day at ASIJ's Kanto Classic Tournament was a close loss to the Academy of Our Lady team from Guam, which ended in a score of 32-28. In the game, Kachel had eight points and eight rebounds, Erika had seven points and Julia had six points and 12 rebounds.

Coach Craig Eby said the team looked lethargic after taking a 10-4 lead in the first quarter. "All of a sudden, we just went dead," Eby said. "They settled in after that, and their big girls started hitting everything inside."

The second game was a very different sort of contest. Against the defending Far East champion Yokota Panthers, the Knights played amazing defense and pulled off a shocking 26-24 victory.

Earlier in the season, Yokota had beaten CAJ 48-20. But that had no effect on Thursday night's game. The Knights collapsed on the Panthers' star post player, Britney, and were able to get her in foul trouble by drawing charges as she drove to the basket.

"We had it plugged inside," Eby said. "Reiko did a great job of dropping back right next to her to make it impossible to get a bounce pass to her. Annabelle was covering well and moving around to wherever Britney was going. Defensively, we did a really good job and I think that frustrated her."

In the final minute, Erika drained a big three-pointer to extend the Knights' lead from one to four points. Yokota would score one more basket, but the Panthers couldn't get a shot off at the final buzzer to tie or win the game.

Julia led the way for the nights against Yokota with seven points and 16 rebounds. Kachel also chipped in six points, while Annabelle had 10 rebounds.

The Knights' overall record this season now stands at 9-4. They will play Kinnick at 12:20 p.m. and Kadena at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.
