JV boys' basketball beats St. Maur 39-32

CAJ’s JV boys’ basketball team held off a late comeback from St. Maur on Saturday to defeat their opponent 39-32. The Knights’ lead of 29-18 after three quarters was trimmed to 35-32 with one minute left before Hikaru made all four of his free throws in the final minute to seal the win for CAJ.

Hikaru led the team with 17 points, with Zion also contributing 12 points.

Assistant coach Rick Handa used a zone pressure defense for most of the game to make it difficult for the Cougars’ ball-handlers. He said the team missed some steals by not anticipating passes, but he was very pleased with the Knights’ overall effort on the press.

“Our press was really working well, and guys were communicating. We weren’t allowing them to set up their offense and we were constantly putting them in panic mode,” Handa said.

Hikaru was relieved that he made the game-sealing free throws after failing to score in another pressure situation during his middle school career.

“Two years ago against BST, I had a free throw when we were losing by one, and I missed that shot. That came back to me, and I thought it was good to get the baskets today to win the game,” he said.

Saturday’s game was the first league win for the JV team this season in seven tries. The squad’s overall record is now 2-8. The JV Knights’ next game will be at St. Mary’s on Tuesday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m.
