HS boys' basketball teams get one win and one loss at St. Mary's

The high school boys' basketball teams played at St. Mary's on Thursday night. Varsity won 47-45 and JV lost 44-29.

Varsity got out to a quick lead in the first quarter, but the Titans fought back quickly. St. Mary's got some momentum with some steals and fast break layups, and the Titans led by four to eight points for much of the second half.

Ultimately, CAJ's inside game was the difference in this matchup. Enosh was fouled on a shot under the basket with 10 seconds left, and he made both free throws to break the tie and win the game for the Knights.

"St. Mary's didn't really have much of an answer for stopping Kyle and Enosh. The guys did a great job of keeping a level head in a very physical game with very few fouls called. We did a good job of securing defensive rebounds, especially in the second half."

CAJ is still in the running for a co-league championship. If the Knights defeat ASIJ on Saturday, CAJ and ASIJ will tie for the Kanto Plains league championship.

In the JV game, the Knights kept the score somewhat close for the first two or three quarters before St. Mary's ran away the lead. CAJ was without two post players that it played with throughout most of the season (Sho and HoJeong), but coach Charles Smoker said the team battled hard.

"We were very aggressive on defense and had to fight for everything," coach Charles Smoker. "We had trouble finishing inside, as we missed probably 18 to 20 layups that we should have. One good point was that we broke their press throughout the game with a lot of long, quarterback-to-wide receiver type passes."

Varsity's league record is now 9-2, and JV has a 1-10 league record. Varsity will wrap up league play on Saturday morning at home against ASIJ, and JV will compete at ASIJ on Saturday in the Kanto Plains JV Tournament.
