HS boys' basketball wins two games against St. Maur

The high school boys' basketball teams hosted St. Maur on Saturday. Varsity won 49-39 and JV won 58-26.

Varsity struggled to find a rhythm in the first half and was behind by a score of 19-15 at halftime. Without four players and trying some newer strategies, the Knights came out a bit flat.

"Against the zone defense St. Maur was playing, we got off some open shots from the outside, but they weren't necessarily good open shots," coach Steve Hall said. "Against a zone defense, when you make just one pass and then take a shot, that's what the defense wants."

CAJ ended up settling down and being more disciplined with the ball in the second half. The Knights made a total of seven three-pointers after halftime.

"It was one of those not-so-pretty games, but sometimes you just have to do what you need to do to get the win," Hall said.

Varsity was led in scoring by Koji (16 points), Ty (14 points) and Enosh (10 points).

JV's win on Saturday was its first win of the year. The Knights started strong and had a 20-point lead before the end of the first half.

"The guys seemed ready for the game," coach Charles Smoker said. "We came out of the gates running, pushing the ball up the court, rebounding and running our plays decently."

In the second half, the Knights were able to slow things down and not run up the score on the Cougars. Smoker said he was proud of the team's character in winning with good sportsmanship. He added that a highlight for the team was that Hugo scored his first basket of the season.

Varsity's league record is now 8-2, and JV has a 1-8 league record. Both the varsity and JV teams will play on Tuesday at Zama.
