Field hockey splits games against ASIJ and BST

The field hockey team played two games at ASIJ on Saturday, winning and losing one apiece. The first game was a 3-0 loss to ASIJ in the morning, while the second was a 2-1 victory over BST in the afternoon.

In the first game, CAJ held the Mustangs scoreless in the first half before allowing three goals after halftime.

Coach Victor Eby thought it was a solid performance by the Knights, despite the loss. He noted that offense was the main issue for the team.

“Overall, we were playing well to start, but we were playing too much on the left side and not utilizing the wing position on the right side,” Eby said. “We did try out a new technique [on defense] that tried to shut down one of their key players, which was actually really effective.”

Rina agreed that the team’s defense was a strong point against ASIJ, saying that her team was “marking really tightly, so ASIJ couldn’t pass that well.”

The second game against BST was a challenge for the team, which had to play on very short rest. However, they had enough offense to get the job done. Reeko scored the first goal of the game near the end of the first half on an assist from Krista, then Morgan scored the tie-breaking goal early in the second half on an assist from Jiwon.

While the team was tired, Captain DoYeon noted an area where her team could have been more aggressive in their 2-1 win.

“There were a few times when BST passed the ball to each other, but it wasn’t strong enough to get all the way to the player,” DoYeon said. “It was kind of in the middle of nowhere. I think we could have done in more in those situations to get to the ball first.”

CAJ also won a 4-3 exhibition match against ASIJ on Saturday. Both teams used players who don’t normally play in their regular lineups. Yohana scored three times and Grace scored once.

The Knights’ official team record is now 3-2. Their next game is not until Tuesday, Jan. 23. That contest will be a home match against BST, and it will be played at 5:15 p.m.
