MS volleyball teams all earn one win and one loss against YIS and St. Maur

CAJ's three middle school volleyball teams all had one win and one loss on Saturday while hosting YIS and St. Maur.

The A Team lost 2-1 to YIS (25-15, 21-25, 12-15) but beat St. Maur 2-1 (23-25, 25-15, 15-12). The B Team lost 2-1 to YIS (14-25, 25-22, 6-15) but beat St. Maur 2-1 (21-25, 25-16, 15-5). The C Team beat YIS 2-0 (25-20, 25-22) and then lost to St. Maur 2-0 (13-25, 12-25).

Coach Steve Hall offered some comments specifically on the A Team's performance. The A Team's win against St. Maur was its first victory of the season in four tries.

"In the first game [against YIS], they kind of beat themselves. They missed some serves at key points and had some unforced errors at critical times. That kind of gets them in a negative frame of mind. If things start to go downhill, then they really go downhill.

They did better with that in the second match, because it was kind of the same situation in terms of having to play a three-set match. There are always runs in volleyball, and when the other team has a run, it's important to switch your mentality to get a side out.

I told the girls that the talent is there for them, but they have to put the mental part of the game together with it."

Assistant coach Lorne Anderson focused on the B and C Teams on Saturday, so he provided some thoughts on their performances.

"The C Team came out with a huge amount of energy at the start of the game and had a lot of enthusiasm to put into practice what they had worked out all week in terms of serving consistency and encouraging one another.

The B Team did an exceptional job serving especially in the second game. We had a three-setter in the second game, and in the third set, we only dropped one serve the whole game and ended up winning by a large margin. It was cool to see them rally together despite having a loss earlier on in the day.

Both teams could really benefit from working on being consistent with their energy, moving to the ball, calling really loudly and being aware that the point is not over until the ball hits the ground."

The records for the three teams are now 1-3 (A Team), 2-3 (B Team) and 2-2-1 (C Team). All three teams will play next Saturday
