Varsity girls' basketball completes third day of Kanto Classic Tournament

The varsity girls' basketball team picked up one win and one loss on the final day of the Kanto Classic Tournament at ASIJ.

The Knights' first game was a thrilling 29-24 overtime victory over the American School of Doha. It was a slow-paced game where both teams were very patient on offense, but the Knights made opportunistic shots and hit five key free throws in overtime.

"We settled down nicely and held our own once we got our lead at the end of the game," coach Craig Eby said. "It was good to see that the team could do what they were supposed to do and protect the ball."

Against the Dragons, Erika (14 points), Julia (nine points) and Reiko (six points) scored all the Knights' points.

The second game was a much bigger challenge. With two starters in Kachel (ankle injury) and Angela (recovering from head injury suffered against Doha) watching from the sidelines, the Knights struggled in their quarterfinal matchup against Yokota.

The Knights had beaten the Panthers in pool play. However, Yokota came out with a vengeance against the shorthanded CAJ team and immediately got out to a huge lead as the Knights had trouble taking care of the ball.

Yokota led 42-9 at the end of three quarters before the Knights turned up the pressure and closed the gap to 45-24 at the final buzzer. Reiko (13 points) was the main source of offense for the Knights against the Panthers.

Reiko thought the team could have used a bit more confidence as it started the Yokota game.

"We should be going into every game thinking it’s going to be the hardest opponent we’ll face, but we also can’t be scared at the same time," she said.

CAJ placed in the top eight of this weekend's 10-team tournament and brought its overall season record to 10-7. The varsity team will host ASIJ at 5 p.m. next Tuesday.
