JV girls' basketball uses big first and fourth quarters to defeat St. Maur 49-29

CAJ's JV girls' basketball team used high-scoring first and fourth quarters to earn a 49-29 win over St. Maur on Saturday at CAJ. The Knights are now 3-0 this season.

The team took a 17-2 advantage in the first quarter with several good plays on the fast break. After that, though, St. Maur gradually crept up on CAJ with full-court pressure defense and some nice outside shots. By the end of the third quarter, the Knights' lead was just 29-23.

At that point, though, CAJ found its groove from earlier in the game. The Knights took control with strong rebounding, several steals and a consistent scoring attack that saw them score 20 points in the final quarter.

"We're definitely grateful for another win, but the team isn't content," coach Jared Johnson said. "We want to take care of the ball better and be more consistent with our effort for all four quarters."

A few players stood out with strong statistical performances on Saturday. Jessica had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Akina stuffed the stat sheet in several ways (nine points, nine rebounds, six assists, five steals and three blocks), Mari had eight points and eight rebounds and Tina had six points and nine rebounds.

CAJ will aim to move to 4-0 next Friday at ASIJ.
