A Revised Statement of Faith[edit]

日本語

Last year a committee worked diligently, carefully, and prayerfully to rewrite our Statement of Faith. The Statement of Faith is comprised of the core beliefs which are foundational to our school. Our board chair, Pauline Carlson, describes the process:

With the change of legal status for CAJ, the Constitution of the school under the old legal status needed revision. The Board of Directors, with input from the Board of Councilors, updated the entire Constitution for use under the new legal status. Article II of the Constitution covers the Basis of the school, which also includes our Statement of Faith. At the urging of the Board of Councilors to update and make the language more inclusive in the Statement of Faith, an ad hoc committee of members of both the Board of Directors and Board of Councilors was formed during the 2013-2014 school year. The committee members researched a number of statements of faith from the six founding missions as well as JEMA, JEA, various mission organizations, denominations, and churches, both in Japan and overseas. The ad hoc committee, composed of pastors and missionaries, spent considerable time discussing and evaluating the important components of a statement of faith. The ad hoc committee proposed an updated Statement of Faith, written in both English and Japanese, to both of the boards in the spring of 2014. After discussion and revision, the Board of Directors approved the final Statement of Faith at the October 1, 2014 board meeting. (Pauline Carlson)

I am delighted to introduce this revised statement to our community, and to start work on making sure our documents and educational program embrace and support this statement. I am particularly pleased to draw your attention to the "Furthermore" statement at the end. We are a special place of exciting and stimulating diversity of belief, both within and outside of the Christian tradition. We sometimes refer to this as being a "big tent" school. This final clause in the final statement is a guideline to how Christians should treat each other when they have differences of opinion: with respect and kindness. I am personally and officially grateful to the committee for their exceptional and careful work on this important core document. And for emphasizing an appropriate standard of behavior for our community.

Your servant in Him,
Brian Vander Haak
Head of School
