Choosing Colleges | November 2012[edit]

Our stated mission at CAJ is to prepare students to impact the world for Christ. For many students, that includes preparing them for a successful college experience. Our students are regularly accepted into a range of excellent, highly regarded colleges and universities. We also consistently hear back from recent alumni that our program prepared them well for university and beyond. When we surveyed alumni about whether CAJ effectively prepared them to transition to college or work, 92% agreed that we had, with 28% of those respondents indicating strong agreement. An alumni told me that the senior comprehensive process was the very best experience he could have hoped for to prepare him for college. Another said that after two full years of college she had yet to meet a teacher as good as her favorite teachers at CAJ.
CAJ recently had an opportunity to host admission representatives from a number of Christian colleges for a college fair. They not only recruited for their own schools, they provided general information about attending college in North America. I was pleased to have a number of the representatives report back to me that they thought our students stood out as attentive, polite, and well prepared. We regularly have college recruiters visit our campus, and we encourage students and parents to consider them a valuable resource for preparing for college no matter where they intend to apply. Having a group of Christian colleges represented on campus also allows our families to explore excellent colleges that may be lesser known or smaller. Many of these Christian colleges have outstanding reputations in North American academic and business circles, not just among Christian colleges.
I hear some students say that they use Christian colleges as their "back-up" or "safety" school because they are more likely to get accepted there. While this is a good strategy, I encourage all our families to consider the value of a good Christian college as a possible first choice. College is still a time of searching and discovering, of preparing, for many young people, and having a Christian curriculum taught by Christian educators is important and valuable no matter what career path you are preparing for. And with the wide variety of Christian colleges available, including ones with excellent academic reputations, attending a Christian college does not have to be an academic or professional compromise. I asked my own children to consider Christian colleges first, and if they couldn't find one that met all their criteria, we would then consider secular colleges. While their good grades and high SAT scores would have also opened up any number of excellent secular options for them, all three found good fits at Christian colleges and chose them willingly.
At CAJ we provide extensive staffing, tools and support for students attending college. For more information or assistance, please visit our guidance web page or talk to one of our guidance counselors or principals. I am also available to answer questions or accept feedback about our guidance efforts or any of our programs.
