Introducing our new Head of School[edit]

日本語

I am delighted to introduce to the CAJ community our new head of school, Dr. Tom Norton. The board, leadership team, and I firmly believe that God has called Tom to CAJ to lead us forward into a challenging and promising future. I asked Tom to introduce himself and his wife Shiela, and he does so below.

Your servant in Him,

Brian Vander Haak

Tom and Sheila Norton on our 35th anniversary, last June, overlooking the Sea of Galilee.

From Dr. Norton:

I was born in Karuizawa and grew up in Nagano Ken. My first 3 grades were in a one-room classroom with Miss Geisbrecht, who taught all the students in grades 1-8. My parents came to Japan in 1952 to serve as missionaries (retired in 2001).

I started attending CAJ in 5th grade, living in the TEAM hostel because my parents went to plant a church in the Osaka area. Middle school years were quite difficult for me but I started playing basketball with my friends and it became my favorite hobby. After struggling for several years spiritually, my junior and senior years were when I started walking more closely with Christ. I graduated from CAJ in 1973 and headed off to college to study to become a teacher and coach. I had the opportunity to play basketball in college with John Nelson (former CAJ head of school), who later became my brother-in-law (he married my sister, Kathleen).

After graduating from college I started teaching and coaching basketball and then married my sweetheart, Sheila Pitcock, two years later. The Lord blessed us with 5 children who range from 21-34 years of age. After teaching and coaching for 5 years, God called me into the pastoral ministry and I became a youth pastor at Gingelville Baptist Church after seminary. After spending 12 years in the metro Detroit area where I pastored Five Points Community Church, we moved to the hills of Tennessee where God called us to plant a church, not too far from Nashville. I was a teacher in public schools and adult education (GED) in our county, while serving as a bivocational pastor.

My wife and I bought 133 acres, built a house, and enjoyed the country life very much. Ten years later, God called us to South Korea where I served as senior pastor at Christian International Church and taught Bible and Christian Worldview classes at Taejeon Christian International School and Hannam University. I finished my Doctor of Ministry studies, which I had started back when we were in Detroit. I started my studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and finished my degree at Temple Baptist Seminary (SBC). My focus was in Leadership and Practical Theology.

I love to read (theology, biographies, and missions), walk and ride bicycles with my wife (motorcycle by myself as my wife does not care to do so), play and coach basketball, and teach/preach the Bible. For the rest of this school year, I will continue to teach HS Bible and provide academic counseling for students in grades 9-11. I am thankful Brian Vander Haak challenged Sheila and me come and visit last December to pray whether or not the Lord might be calling us to come to CAJ-and then he hired us. I also appreciate his willingess to help start transitioning me to get a handle on what goes on behind the scenes in preparation for next year.

I am truly blessed and humbled as I look forward to the challenge of becoming the head of school here at CAJ next July. May we continue to pray for the Lord to bless and guide CAJ this year and in the next 65 years, should the Lord delay His coming.

Tom and Sheila Norton on our 35th anniversary, last June, overlooking the Sea of Galilee.
