We are celebrating at CAJ this month! After years of hard work, we have been granted Gakko Hojin status by the Tokyo government starting April 1, 2013. Although the board and administration have been talking about possibly making this change for over 20 years, several years ago CAJ was informed that we would need to make a change soon because Zaidan Hojin status would no longer be available. We could have chosen to be a different type of organization that would have been easier to switch to, but we took this opportunity to be officially recognized as a school by the Japanese government.
There will be very little change as far as what our children experience in the classroom. We were very careful to ensure that we would still be able to offer our distinctly Christian, western-style program to the families we currently serve. Most of the changes we have had to make are about accounting and financial accountability, and we welcomed the opportunity to upgrade our systems and make them align better with Japanese reporting requirements.
CAJ will continue to operate with two boards as was required before: a Board of Directors and a Board of Councilors. We operate under a system called Policy Governance. You can find board minutes, the board manual, and more information on the board pages on our public website (accessible from the Life@CAJ menu). If you have questions about our governance model or about the legal status change, please feel free to contact me or the current board chair, Pauline Carlson.

Brian Vander Haak
Headmaster
