Ingredients
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
4 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
2 Tbsp sugar
1/3 to 1/2 cup shortening
2/3 to 3/4 cup milk

Directions
Preheat oven to 400 ̊F. Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening. Stir in enough milk to make a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead gently. Roll or pat dough 1/2" to 1" thick and cut with floured biscut cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake about 12-15 minutes, until browned.

  • Barb Duhrkoop's version decreases baking powder to 3 tsp and omits the cream of tarter and sugar and decreases shortenting to 1/4 cup. Bake at 450 ̊F for 10-12 minutes.
