Acronym and Term Directory[edit]

ACs[edit]

CAJ's Athletic Coordinators (ACs) run our extensive sports program.

ACSI[edit]

Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) is an organization that CAJ is affiliated with that provides training and curriculum materials, sponsors conferences, and provides information about best practices in Christian education.

ACT[edit]

American College Testing (though now they are officially just ACT) is a test similar to the far more common SAT.

AED/CPR[edit]

Many of our staff are trained in first aid including Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. There are several AED units on campus.

Annex[edit]

The Annex refers to offices and meeting areas located in the former hostel building towards the back of campus. Please check with the business office if you need help finding a particular office or staff person.

AOCR[edit]

The Academic Office Conference Room (AOCR) is a room in the academic office that is often used for meetings.

AP Classes[edit]

Advanced Placement (AP) classes are available for students to in the high school. More information is available in the high school handbook here.

Artscape[edit]

Artscape is a once-a-year opportunity for international school students to have their art displayed downtown (typically at the Children's Castle). It is not a competition, and the artwork is selected and hung by the art teachers from each school.

ASIJ[edit]

American School in Japan (ASIJ) is an international school in Tokyo that is part of the KPASS (Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools) group that CAJ also belongs to.

A-13[edit]

A-13 is the large music classroom in the lower level of the auditorium building.

Back-to-School Day (BTSD)[edit]

A day, usually several weeks after school starts, where parents have an opportunity to learn more about their children's CAJ experience.

Bake Sales[edit]

Individual fund raisers often take the form of Bake Sales which involve students making a variety of baked goods to sell to raise money for approved fund raising projects. See also Concessions.

BOCR[edit]

The business office conference room (BOCR) is a room near the main entrance of the school where meetings are scheduled.

CHAT[edit]

Community groups, Homeroom, and Assembly Time in the high school.

Co-curricular[edit]

Activities outside of, but connected to, CAJ's curriculum (extra-curricular) for which students do not receive academic credit (or a grade on their report card). Co-curricular activities include sports, parts of our music program, academic KPASS events such as Brain Bowl and Math Field Day, theater, etc.

Concessions[edit]

Food sales at events are often called concessions when the are run by student organizations. The seniors run concessions at many sporting events held on CAJ's campus (home games) to raise money for their senior service project. Individual fund raisers often take the form of Bake Sales which involve students making a variety of baked goods to sell to raise money for approved fund raising projects.

Credit[edit]

Courses in the secondary count as Credits which count toward graduation requirements.

Culminating Events[edit]

Held at the end of each semester in the high school, culminating events include exams, presentations, and other assessments intended to asses progress over that semester or year. High school students are only required to be on campus during their assigned culminating events times.

CSI[edit]

Christian Schools International (CSI) is an organization that CAJ is affiliated with that provides training and curriculum materials, sponsors conferences, and provides information about best practices in Christian education.

Diploma[edit]

The certificate awarded graduating students who have completed all the necessary requirements.

DoDD[edit]

Department of Defense Dependent (DoDD) schools are US military sponsored schools around the world. CAJ regularly competes with DoDD schools in the Asian region. Attending events at DoDD schools usually involves getting clearance to attend in advance. Contact the athletic coordinators or the office if you have questions.

EAL[edit]

English as an Additional Language (EAL) is one of a number of terms to identify students who are learning English as an additional language. We transitioned from the term ESL (English as a Second Language) in the Fall of 2012.

EARCOS[edit]

East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) is an organization that CAJ is affiliated with that sponsors conferences and provides information about best practices in international education. EARCOS hosts major Asian-region conferences for teachers and administrators.

Freshman[edit]

Ninth grader (student in first year of high school).

ES[edit]

Elementary School (ES) division: Grades K-5 at CAJ.

ESL[edit]

English as a Second Language (ESL) is one of a number of terms to identify students who are learning English as an additional language. We prefer the term EAL: English as an Additional Language.

GPA[edit]

Grade Point Average (GPA): see high school handbook entry on Grading for more information.

GT[edit]

Gospel Team (GT) is a summer outreach program run by hi-B.A. that many of our students participate in.

Harvest Hall[edit]

Harvest Hall is a meeting room in Matsukawa Place, a building adjacent to our campus, that is used for many school events. It can be booked through the Japan Baptist Fellowship office located in room #106 on the first floor of Matsukawa Place. The phone number is 042-458-8106.

HiBA (hi-B.A.)[edit]

High School Born Againers (hi-B.A.) is a very active youth group that many of our high school students participate in. It is not directly affiliated with CAJ, but we support them by allowing advertising and access to our resources and students.

HS[edit]

High School (HS) division: Grades 9-12 at CAJ. Grade 9 = freshman | Grade 10 = sophomore | Grade 11 = junior | Grade 12 = senior

IEP/OAP[edit]

Individual Education Plans (IEP) and Official Accommodation Plans (OAP) are for students with identifiable special needs. These plans are monitored by the Support Team. Contact the Guidance Office if you have questions.

ISSH[edit]

International School of the Sacred Heart (ISSH) is an international school in Tokyo that is part of the KPASS (Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools) group that CAJ belongs to.

JAM[edit]

Jesus and Me (JAM) is a middle school program run by KBF (Kurume Bible Fellowship, a church that rents our facilities). JAM is not directly affiliated with CAJ, but we support it by allowing advertising and access to our resources and students.

JCAA[edit]

Japan Christian Academy Association (JCAA) is an organization that allows US citizens to donate to CAJ and receive a tax deduction receipt.

JCIS[edit]

Japan Council of International schools (JCIS) is an education and advocacy group of English language international schools in Japan that CAJ is a member of.

Junior[edit]

Eleventh grader (student in their 3rd year of high school).

Junior Varsity[edit]

High school sports are typically divided into Varsity (the top team) and Junior Varsity (a team or teams of students at the level below Varsity)

KBF[edit]

Kurume Bible Fellowship (KBF) is an international church that rents CAJ's campus and holds services there each Sunday. KBF is not directly affiliated with CAJ.

Knight's Castle[edit]

The play structure near the tracks and tennis courts (on the back side of the soccer/play field).

KPASSP[edit]

The Kanto Plain Association of Secondary School Principals (KPASSP) is a group of international and local DoDD schools that have joined together to form a league for competition and collaboration in sports, fine and performing arts, and other activities.

Lettering / Letterman[edit]

Students can qualify for "letters" or awards based on their participation in sporting and some fine arts events. See the athletic and student handbooks for more information.

LRC[edit]

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) works with students of all abilities to help them achieve academic success.

LT[edit]

The Leadership Team (LT) is the administration group that includes the head of school, the three divisional principals, the director of the SSS division, and the business manager.

Matsukawa Place[edit]

Is the housing, office, and meeting complex next to the auditorium and dining hall, but it is not officially part of our campus.

Mini Gym[edit]

Is the small gym area located in an upper floor of the gym building accessible from the lobby.

MK[edit]

Missionary Kid (MK) - an internationally recognized term which identifies the children of missionaries.

MPR[edit]

The Multi-purpose Room (MPR) is an area off the academic building atrium and across from the library that is often used for public meetings and other gatherings.

MS[edit]

Middle School (MS) division. At CAJ middle school includes grades 6, 7, and 8.

NHS[edit]

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an internationally recognized group that high school students can seek to become members of. CAJ has an official chapter, and information is available from the Guidance Office.

NIV[edit]

CAJ students use New International Version (NIV) Bibles for schoolwork.

Packets[edit]

Collections of papers or other materials distributed to students or parents.

Pep Rallies[edit]

Pep rallies are occasional events to raise school spirit and often to promote a particular sport. They are often organized by student councils in the secondary.

PIP (Parents in Prayer)[edit]

Parents in Prayer (PIP) is a PTA-sponsored activity open to all parents.

PSAT[edit]

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is administered in high school to help students in grades 10 and 11 prepare for the SAT.

PTA[edit]

CAJ has a very active Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Rubicon Atlas[edit]

Rubicon is the name of the online service we use to write and maintain our curriculum in a style called "curriculum mapping."

Rubric[edit]

A rubric is a scoring tool that indicates what criteria an assignment or examination will be assessed on.

SAT[edit]

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a test that is widely required for admission to western colleges and universities. As a convenience for our students and families, CAJ is a registered SAT testing center. CAJ's Guidance Office has information about preparing for the SAT test. The registrar can answer questions about registering for the test.

Salutatorian[edit]

The graduating student with the second highest GPA (grade point average) while at CAJ. (see valedictorian)

Secondary[edit]

The term secondary refers to the middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) divisions.

Senior[edit]

Twelfth grader (student in final year of high school).

Senior Comprehensives (Comps)[edit]

The Senior Comps (comprehensives) are a year long culminating assessment involving research, writing, a hands on project, and a public presentation on a day in May.

Sophomore[edit]

Tenth grader (student in second year of high school).

Spirit Week[edit]

Spirit weeks are typically run by student councils in the secondary, and involve activities to generate school spirit (dress up days, pep rallies, etc.).

SSS[edit]

School Support Services (SSS) is the division of CAJ that works with homeschool families and affiliated schools.

Stories Plus[edit]

Is a program for SSS (School Support Services) preschoolers usually meeting twice a month.

Support Team[edit]

Our Support Team works with students with identified special needs and operates our Learning Resource Center (LRC).

SWOW[edit]

The School With Out Walls (SWOW) program in the HS is a week in October during which regular high school classes are suspended and each grade embarks on leadership training activities or field trips.

TAP[edit]

CAJ's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) funds are available by application from the business office.

TCK[edit]

Third Culture Kid (TCK) is an internationally recognized term that identifies someone who as a child spent a significant period of time in one or more culture(s) other than his or her own, thus integrating elements of those cultures and their own birth culture into a third culture. TCKs tend to have more in common with one another, regardless of nationality, than they do with non-TCKs from their own country.

TELL[edit]

Tokyo English Life Line (TELL) is a non-profit counseling center. The Guidance Office can provide more information.

Thrift Shop[edit]

Is a twice yearly rummage sale and community event sponsored by the PTA.

TOEFL[edit]

Test Of English as a Foreign Language. Some western universities require this for international students.

Transcript[edit]

Is the official record of classes, grades, and other key information provided to other schools when students transfer and to colleges upon request.

Valedictorian[edit]

Dear parents/guardians and CAJ students:

We are preparing for our 71st year at CAJ. School for middle school and high school students begins on Thursday August 20. Elementary and Kindergarten students will begin on Friday, August 21.

New families are requested to attend an important orientation from 1:00-3:00 on Wednesday, August 19. Due to temperature checks, we are requesting families to arrive at 12:45. Please do not come earlier than that time. There will be two check points. For those that park in the CAJ parking lot, there will be one check point from there, and for those that come by train or park in a nearby parking lot, there will be another entrance for you. There will be staff welcoming you and pointing you to the proper check point upon arrival. We will begin our meeting in the Auditorium.

We are looking forward to welcoming each of our students and families back and working together to make 2020-2021 an excellent school year for us all. Our school year calendar at a glance can be found on our website.

There is a lot of information needed for families to prepare for returning next year and for those starting CAJ for the first time. Please carefully read through this and take note of important dates and things you need to do before school begins.

Calendars[edit]

All school calendars are posted on the CAJ website and can be subscribed to or viewed from this page. These are essential tools of communication for our community. Class calendars will be updated at the beginning of the school year.

Contact Your Child's Principal With Questions or Concerns[edit]

Most of your questions can be answered by information in our handbooks (elementary, middle, high) or on our website, but if you have questions or concerns please contact your child's principal (Jean Hino, ES; Winnie Langelaar, MS; Tanya Hall, HS).

Necessary Forms[edit]

Please view all forms for your family on the school forms page. It is very important that all required forms are returned by the due dates. Forms may include Health forms, Address Update, Student Emergency Form, Waiver and Indemnity Form (one for each student, please), Parent Responsibility Agreement/Parent Code of Conduct for Child Safety. Other forms include Train/Bus Application, Official Document Request, and the Sports Physical.

  3. You will need to do the forms for each of your children as well as a few that are for the whole family.

CAJ ID Number and Password[edit]

We will send you your CAJ ID number and password in August. You can use your ID number and your own password to update your contact information and to access your child's online grades (for grades 6-12).

Family Directory[edit]

CAJ's Family Directory is password protected. Access to contact information needs to be restricted to CAJ families. Information should not be shared with anyone else.

When you log in for the first time, you will note that you do not have access to the directory because you have not "opted-in" to sharing your information. Please opt-in to share your family information (and hence have access to other families' information). Please note that changes may take up to 2 business days to process.

Name Tags[edit]

For security reasons, we ask that all adults on campus wear CAJ name tags during regular school hours. You will receive yours in August, and you can ask for replacements at the academic office. Name tags have the added benefit of being welcoming for new families that have many new names to remember.

Essential Policies[edit]

It is important that all our families be aware of our policies. These policies can also be found in our handbooks (elementary, middle, high).

The following three policies are especially important for protecting our children and each other:

PTA[edit]

Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is an important part of our life together at CAJ. Information about how you can be involved in PTA, and about the many wonderful things PTA are involved in, can be found on the PTA section of the website.

  • A welcome letter from the PTA president will be sent directly to your email account.
  • A form for volunteering can be accessed here.
  • The PTA hosts prayer meetings.

Handbooks[edit]

The divisional handbooks have been reviewed and are posted online (elementary, middle, high). Please do be familiar with (and possibly bookmark for easy reference) these important handbooks.

CAJ ID ナンバーとパスワード[edit]

ご家族のCAJパスワードインフォメーションは、8月にご自宅へ郵送されます。住所変更やお子様の成績をオンライン上で確認(6年生から12年生まで)する際は、このIDナンバーと初回ログイン後ご自身で設定したパスワードをお使いください。

住所録[edit]

この住所録は、パスワードで保護されています。住所録は、CAJの関係者以外がアクセスすることのないようにしてください。また、個人情報は、誰とも共有しないようにお願い致します。

初回に ログインをした時は、「住所録へアクセスできません」と記載された画面がでてきますが、これは、あなたの情報をCAJの住所録内で公示するための"opted-in"(登録)がされていないためです。ご自分の情報を住所録内で公示するには(また、他のご家族情報にアクセスするために)、"opted-in"を選択してください。情報の変更があった場合には、ウェブサイト上に反映されるまで2日間(土日祝日、学校休校日を除く)かかります。

ネームタグ(名札)[edit]

警備上の理由から、学校時間中、CAJキャンパス内では、全ての大人の方は、ネームタグを必ず身につけてください。ネームタグは、8月にご自宅へ郵送されます。尚、ネームタグのホルダーや紐の取り替えについては、アカデミックオフィスへお尋ね下さい。ネームタグは、新しいご家族を歓迎し、お互いの名前を覚えるためにも役に立つツールとなります。

Bicycle Safety[edit]

Bicycles are a great way to get around. Please ride safely. (There have been traffic accidents involving bicycles and pedestrians, bicycles and other bicycles, and bicycles by themselves. Many of these have resulted in serious injury or fatalities.)

Please follow bike safety rules and guidelines.

Japanese official guidelines for safely riding a bicycle:[edit]

  1. Bicycles must, in principle, use the road. Using the sidewalk is an exception.
  2. You must ride on the left side of the road.
  3. On the sidewalk, pedestrians have priority. If you ride on the sidewalk, you must ride slowly on the road side of the sidewalk.
  4. Observe safety rules:
    • No riding under the influence of alcohol, having two people on a bike (except when one is a child who is below six years old), or riding parallel (side by side).
    • Turn on your bike light at night.
    • At an intersection, observe the traffic light or signs, come to a complete stop, and make sure it's safe before proceeding.
  5. Children should wear a helmet.

Japanese regulations state that when riding a bike, do not:[edit]

  1. Ignore a traffic light.
  2. Ignore a stop sign.
  3. Interfere with pedestrians.
  4. Ride in the pedestrian crosswalk (when this interfers with the pedestrians).
  5. Ride bicycles in parallel (side by side).
  6. Ride on the sidewalk (see guidelines above).
  7. Ride on the right side of the road.
  8. Ride with 2 people on a single bicycle (except when one is a child who is below six years old).
  9. Ride without a bike light when it is getting dark and is dark.
  10. Ride while holding an open umbrella.
  11. Ride an improperly maintained bicycle (brake problems, no reflectors, etc.).
  12. Ride where riding is prohibited.
  13. Ride under the influence of alcohol.
  14. Ride with excessive speed.
  15. Enter a railroad crossing when the bars are coming down or down.
  16. Use a cell-phone (talking, looking at the screen).
  17. Carry big baggage.
  18. Use headphones.

You will be held responsible if you cause an accident with your bicycle:[edit]

  • If you cause the injury or death of another person, you may be held criminally liable for "gross negligence resulting in death or bodily injury."
  • For civil liability, you will be responsible for compensating the victim for damages.

The CAJ campus is clearly defined by gates, fences, and walls. The campus is private property, reserved for the use of CAJ community members and others by invitation.

  1. Official supervision by teachers on campus begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday. CAJ assumes no responsibility for students on campus before 8:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. or on weekends. It is the parents’ job to monitor the whereabouts of their children and exercise appropriate intervention if the parents’ wishes are not obeyed. School buildings will be closed after 4:30 pm. Offices will be closed at 5:00pm.
  2. Once students have arrived on campus in the morning, they may not leave until the school day is over.
  3. At no time should students be inside any facility without the permission and supervision of an adult. Students who want to use a facility outside of school hours must ask a supervisor to complete and submit a Facilities Usage Request Form at least one week in advance.
  4. CAJ holds students accountable for appropriate behavior to and from school. Any misbehavior before, during, and after school hours (including smoking, drinking, stealing, vandalism and other disrespectful behavior) will be handled by principal as if it had occurred on the campus.

Exceptions[edit]

The exception for leaving campus during the school day is that Grade 12 students may have privileges to go into the machi (business area around the train station) for lunch and break. Grade 9-11 students may go to Shimizu’s during lunch and break, but no further than the Shimizu store.

  • Students who leave campus at other times or who behave in unacceptable ways may lose these privileges or experience other consequences. At no time should students be inside any CAJ facility without the permission and supervision of an adult.

Communicable Disease Prevention Policy[edit]

Overview[edit]

The Christian Academy in Japan strives to promote mental, physical, and spiritual health from a biblical perspective. In striving toward this goal, we strive to balance the needs of the individual with those of the community. One of our efforts to that end is the prevention, control, and containment of communicable diseases.

Common Communicable Diseases[edit]

  1. Diseases which are transmitted through casual contact or airborne route may include, but are not limited to:
    • Common childhood diseases
    • Strep throat
    • Influenza
    • Lice
    • Tuberculosis
  2. Immunization Schedule — CAJ strongly recommends that students' basic immunizations be completed according to the Japanese or US schedule. In order to encourage parents to complete immunizations, this recommendation will be included in the student handbook, parent letters,, etc., whenever applicable. The school nurse will maintain student records of immunization data, waivers, and exclusions, and issue exposure notices as needed in order to reduce continued transmission of disease.
  3. Health History and Physical Examination Forms — The head of school, in consultation with the school nurse, will exclude students from school who fail to submit the completed Health History and Physical Examination Forms by the first day of school. These forms, required of all new students and those entering grades 6 and 9, include a student’s medical history, immunization data, and a physical examination dated within 6 months from when the student begins classes. TB screening dated within 6 months from when the student begins classes is required for all new students and those entering grade 6. Exceptions will be allowed at the discretion of the school nurse. For new students and students entering grades 6 and 9 who participate in co-curricular sports, the Health History and Physical Examination forms will be valid for one calendar year from the date of the physical examination. All other middle school and high school students participating in co-curricular sports must submit a yearly sports physical. (SY 00-01: 186; SY 01-02: 85)
  4. Waivers for Parents Refusing Immunization — Parents who refuse immunizations for their children must sign a waiver stating that they absolve the school of any liability related to the possible consequences to these children in the event of an outbreak of a communicable disease at school or during school activities. The waiver includes an understanding that the school may exclude non-immunized children from school for a specified period of time if certain communicable diseases are found at school.
  5. Exclusion From School — The head of school or school nurse may exclude students from school who are suspected to have or are diagnosed with a communicable disease, or whose exposure to a communicable disease may threaten the well-being of that individual. The school nurse may request a physician's note documenting a student's health status upon returning to school following any communicable disease.
  6. School Closings for Communicable Disease Outbreaks — The decision to close school due to communicable disease outbreaks will be made by the head of school. Consultation on such decisions may be held with the school nurse, the occupational health doctor, and the leadership team.
  7. Sharing of Medical Information — Individuals known to have or carry a communicable disease may be asked to submit medical information to the head of school and school nurse. It is within the head of school and/or school nurse's prerogative to share this information with other staff members if necessary.

Serious Chronic or Communicable Diseases[edit]

  1. Serious infectious diseases transmitted by blood-borne pathogens through contact with bodily fluids include, but are not limited to, hepatitis viruses and HIV.
  2. In the event a prospective student or employee has a serious chronic condition or any infectious communicable disease (HIV, hepatitis, TB, etc.), the following procedures will be followed:
    1. Interview — The head of school will conduct an interview including, but not limited to, the student and parent or prospective employee and review with them a recent physician’s report of the person's current health status. The report must have been written within three months. The physician may be contacted directly by the head of school or school nurse.
    2. Consultation Regarding Enrollment or Employment — The head of school will consult with the division principal and school nurse and make a determination about enrollment based on the student's age, grade level, health status, and parent(s) and student's understanding and attitudes toward the disease, as well as the mode of transmission.
    3. In the case of a prospective employee, the head of school will consult with the division principal and school nurse and make a determination about employment, based on the person's age, health status, and understanding and attitudes toward the disease, as well as the mode of transmission.
    4. (IHP) Individualized Health Plan — If the student is enrolled, an individualized health plan (IHP) will be written regarding any accommodations or restrictions the student may need due to the serious chronic condition or the communicable disease. The IHP will be shared with the appropriate staff and will strive to provide for the total well-being of the student, both as an individual and in relationship to the entire school community.
  3. Change in Health Status — If a student or employee who is currently at CAJ should later test positive for HIV, hepatitis viruses, etc., that person will be subject to the same procedure.

The CAJ Community[edit]

  1. Universal Precautions Procedures — In addition to known carriers, the school recognizes the possibility that within the CAJ community there may also be those who are unknown carriers of a communicable disease; therefore, all school personnel shall practice procedures related to the prevention and containment of communicable diseases as described in the CAJ Universal Precautions Procedures. The emphasis of the Universal Precautions Procedures is on the protection of all persons rather than on the identification and discrimination of infected persons. The procedures will be printed in the student handbook and staff hand book, and updated as necessary.
  2. Emergency Situations — It is understood that in some emergency situations it may not be possible to apply universal precautions; however, emergency action should never be delayed, since the risk of transmission of blood-borne diseases is too small to justify endangering a child.
  3. Health Education — Every effort must be made to provide appropriate health education, including information on the prevention and containment of communicable diseases.

  1. As a condition of employment, CAJ will provide an annual staff health examination including a blood test and a chest x-ray. The chest x-ray acts as a screening for tuberculosis.
  2. These records must be updated at least once every three years.
  3. In the event a prospective employee has a serious chronic condition or any infectious communicable disease (HIV, hepatitis, TB, etc.), the following procedure will be followed:
    1. The head of school will conduct an interview with the prospective employee and review with him/her a report of his/her current health status written in the past three months. The physician may be contacted directly by the head of school or the school nurse.
    2. The head of school will consult with the division principal and school nurse and make a determination about employment, based on the person's age, current health status, and understanding and attitude toward the disease and the method of transmission.
    3. Any restriction of duties will be outlined in writing by the head of school and division principal prior to the beginning of the employee's duties.
    4. Currently employed staff members who test positive for HIV, hepatitis, TB, etc., shall be subject to the same procedure. (Adopted SY 93-94:35; amended SY 97-98:236)




Communicating With CAJ in English[edit]

  • Parents and guardians are expected to participate in their child's education by being informed and responsible for all CAJ expectations and communications (Board Policy 2.3.1.2.2). Families who wish to attend CAJ must be able to communicate clearly with the school and the teachers in English. For some families this means having a plan in place to translate English messages to and from the school. This is so we can better assist you with your child's education.
  • CAJ does translate some information into Japanese (and less commonly into Korean), but most materials are not translated. Some, but not most, events and meetings have translators provided. If neither parent is fluent in English, you will be asked to indicate your communication arrangements during the application process so that we can better help you and your child achieve your goals.

  • 保護者の方は、CAJの要望とCAJと保護者との間のコミュニケーションを十分に理解し、責任を持つことによって子供たちの教育に参加するべきです。(理事会規定2.3.1.2.2)。CAJにお子様の入学を希望されるご家族は、学校の教職員と明確に英語でコミュニケーションができなければなりません。 学校との連絡は、全て英語で行われますので、必要であれば、各自で英語に訳す手段を準備しておいてください。これによって、学校は、お子様の教育に対して、より良い支援をすることができます。
  • CAJからの情報は、日本語(ごくまれに韓国語)に訳されているものもありますが、そのほとんどのものは、英語で伝えられます。いくつかの行事やミーティングでは、通訳者をご用意いたしますが、ほとんどの場合は通訳者はいません。ご両親がどちらも英語ができない場合は、入学手続きの時に、どのように英語でコミュニーケーションをとるかということを学校に伝えて頂きます。これによって、学校は、お子様の目標達成のためによりよい支援をすることができます。


Communication With Parents[edit]

  • CAJ desires to have a close working relationship with parents. Having the ability to check your email and our website is necessary for ongoing communication with CAJ. Email and the website are our primary methods of contact for general information, grades, and announcements about disruptions to our program (closures and delayed openings). Closures and delayed openings are also available as messages on our phone answering system. An internet connection and computer access is also necessary for students to complete homework, practice keyboarding, and be in communication with the school and their teachers.
  • In addition to report cards, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences, we have the following avenues for communication: CAJ Website (includes access to Calendars, announcements, handbooks, the password protected family directory, and grades in the MS and HS), a PTA Back-to School Event in September, division specific newsletters (weekly classroom newsletters in elementary division) and a combined annual Chronicle and Alumni News publication. Parents are asked to inform the school of any email changes and make necessary updates in order to receive all important information from the school.
  • To keep parents informed of daily classroom work, an assignment notebook (the Agenda) is given to each student in MS and ES. Many teachers give time at the end of classes to record assignments, and students are expected to take their agendas home each night. Each teacher in MS and HS also publishes an iCal with important due dates that parents and students can subscribe to by going to http://www.caj.or.jp/calendars/index.php.
  • CAJ encourages teachers to be in regular contact with parents, and asks that parents communicate concerns or questions to teachers in a timely manner. Please phone the school during the school day or send a note or email. Teachers are not called out of class to take telephone calls; a message can be left on our automatic message service.
  • CAJ asks that parents make an appointment in order to discuss an important issue with a teacher or principal. Important matters should not be raised in impromptu settings such as school hallways, co-curricular events, or workshop services.
  • If a question or concern is not resolved, please contact the principal.

Computer and Technology Acceptable Use Policy[edit]

Within existing school policy, including Standards of Conduct, technology and digital resources are to be used to support, advance, and enhance learning and productivity in order to achieve CAJ's mission.

  • All computer and digital device use is covered by this policy, including (but not limited to) school laptops (see One-to-One Laptop Program), personal computers (see Personal Computers on Campus), tablets, cell phones, etc.
  • Appropriate use extends to social media, email, chat, and other online activities. (see also Online and Digital Behaviors)
  • Appropriate behavior is expected at all times, including outside of class and off campus.
  • Users will demonstrate discernment and caring for others when using computers. Do not use technology in ways that are objectionable, obscene, offensive, or harmful to yourself or others. Students and staff are required to report concerns in accordance with our Mandated Reporting Policy.
  • Users will respect others’ privacy. Do not access or use another’s account or open, read, modify or remove another's files, postings or emails. Do not post pictures or make comments about others online without their permission.
  • Appropriate use includes only using computers, digital devices, and the CAJ network for legal activities. If you have a question about whether an application or activity is legal, please consult with the technology team.
  • Computers and other digital devices may only be used for school work during class, unless the teacher specifically allows an exception.
  • Users are responsible for the safety and security of their account and computer.
  • Users are responsible for properly saving and backing up their files.
  • Users will be good stewards of computer resources. Do not abuse, damage, or disrupt computers, networks, or other related technology. (see also Graffiti and Vandalism)
  • Authorized staff will access student accounts (including data on the server, on the computer or other devices including cell phones, or online) and monitor usage when deemed necessary.
  • Violations of this policy will be reported to the appropriate authority and may result in discipline including the loss of computer privileges.

Dances[edit]

CAJ does not sponsor or promote social dances.




Dangerous items[edit]

Dangerous items such as real or realistic weapons (knives, etc.), lighters, and fireworks are not permitted and will be confiscated.



Emergency instructions[edit]

  • Closing: If school is closed because of bad weather or some other emergency, we will:
    • Post the closure on the CAJ website caj.ac.jp
    • Send an emergency closing announcement by email to all CAJ families
    • Activate a school closing message in the academic office 042-471-0022
  • Disasters: The school is equipped with generator power as well as emergency supplies of food and water. In the aftermath of a disastrous situation that occurs while school is in session:
    • Until a general “all clear” statement is issued by authorities, students will not be permitted to leave campus without administrative consent or being accompanied by a parent or guardian;
    • No student will use the CAJ telephone unless directed. Cellular phones may be used by students.
  • Parental responsibilities are as follows:
    • Ensure that students carry school and other identification cards with them at all times
    • Advise children of the necessary actions and responsibilities if caught en route to/from school


Event Attendance and Supervision[edit]

  • Students and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the variety of school programs, concerts, and sports activities offered throughout the year.
  • If a child is a part of the program, the school will supervise the student; but if the child is not participating in the program, the parents are responsible.
  • Students who come for events are expected to remain at the event. At programs and during indoor sports events, elementary children are to be supervised by their parents. At no time should students be inside any facility without the permission and supervision of an authorized adult. CAJ assumes no responsibility for students on campus before 8:00am or after 4:00pm (library and LRC until 4:30).
  • The mini-gym is open to parents who want to watch the game while supervising their small children (up to and including grade 5). A child should not be sent to play in the mini-gym without having arranged for someone to look after him/her. Small children in the mini-gym without direct parental supervision and middle school students will be asked to return to the main gym.
